Greece is once again in the news as the voters seem to be leaning toward the political parties who are in favor of the bailout. This came from a poll yesterday which will be good news for the European members of the EU. Specifically, the poll indicated that the New Democracy party leading ahead of the radical SYRIZA, a party which has pledged to cancel the bailout.
It is clear threat EU leaders has said that without the bailout Greece will default and head for bankruptcy. Additionally, they would be ousted from the EU which could well set off a negative domino reaction throughout the EU. If the poll, is accurate the New Democracy party will form a coalition which will approve the bailout plan. as difficult as this may seem it is the only rational move for Greece and the EU.
The election is about four weeks away so anything can happen. Although is does look good for the pro bailout contingent it is not over. There has been a great deal of volatility with the Greek electorate so there are no guarantees.
“It seems people vented their anger in the election and then they got scared. They disliked that there was no government and they got worried about a possible exit from the euro,” political analyst John Loulis said of the surprise poll result. ”Still, voters are far from enthusiastic with New Democracy. Things are still volatile. The outcome of the elections will depend on who will make the fewest mistakes.”
Fitch has downgraded the Greek financial rating again and it will be downgraded further if the bailout is not implemented.
“In the event that the new general elections scheduled for 17 June fail to produce a government with a mandate to continue with the EU-IMF programme of fiscal austerity and structural reform, an exit of Greece from (the euro) would be probable,” the ratings agency said in a statement.
The leaders of the SYTIZA has certainly not given up and they still believe they will win.
“They are trying to terrorise the people to make SYRIZA cave in. We will never compromise,” the ex-Communist student leader told his party’s lawmakers, often addressing them as “comrades”. ”We will never participate in a government to rescue the bailout,” he said. “The Greek people voted for an end to the bailout and barbaric austerity. They ignored the threats and the cheap propaganda. And we are certain they will do the same now.”
Time will tell as to whether or not the Greek electorate will vote in favor of the bailout. the austerity program has been hard on the greek people gut they are between a “rock and a hard place”. The medicine is harsh but there seems to be no the alternative. this writer suspects that the polls will be volatile over the nest four weeks and we will not know the outcome until election day next month.
